Get Better Grades in Your Exams
You probably know that I taught 20 years in mainstream schools in England.
Whenever homework was due to be handed in, invariably one or two students would be scribbling their final sentence as they walked in through the door! Talk about leaving it to the last-minute! And sometimes parents would complain that their children had too much homework to do and that they were having to go to bed late to get it all done. On further investigation I invariably discovered that their children didn't actually start their homework until bedtime! It was a good excuse to stay up a bit longer! Once their parents realised they were leaving it to the last minute, they kept a closer eye on them and guess what? Bedtime resumed its usual time! If that sounds like you, you're probably already aware that you're not doing yourself justice. And you're probably painfully aware of the stress you cause yourself.
When you're studying for an exam it makes it really difficult to properly understand new material, to do the extra research it sometimes takes to fully comprehend your subject and inevitably give not allowed time to plan, prepare and execute your revision thoroughly. You cause yourself an enormous amount of stress when you try to cram too much in, fully aware that time is running out on you.
And if you don't give yourself the time necessary to understand what you're trying to learn, how can you expect your exam results to do you justice? How can you expect to get the better grades you're capable of? And how can you feel good about yourself when you're always on the back foot? Get used to doing a little every day and make that your new habit. Keep track of what you've learnt using the excellent tools and advice available, and begin to make consistent progress and enjoy it.
Research tells us you're much better off doing a little and often, than trying to concentrate for longer periods.
And don't wait until you feel like doing it - that time may never come! Do it because you made a commitment to yourself.
And remind yourself regularly why you're doing it at all.
How important is it to you to pass these exams? What will you gain? What difference will it make to you? To get better grades in your exams you'll have to focus on what's important. Get your head down, and make a start. You'll be glad you did.
